George C. Field

July 27, 1926 — April 22, 2015

George C. Field, 88, a resident of McGraw House passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at the Ithaca Hospicare Residence with his loving wife Ginny and oldest son Duran by his side. He was born in White Plains, NY in 1926 the son of the late William and Mildred Woolcott Field.


A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, George is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia L. "Ginny" Aguilar Field; his children, Deborah Calo (Peter) of Chico, CA, Duran Field (Margaret McCulla) of Rockville, MD and David Field (Patti) of Snellville, GA and his grandchildren, Jordan and Ben Calo of Chico and Nicole and Michael Field of Snellville. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Hinkle; his in-laws, Carmen Brewer, Rita and Robert Boothroyd, Rene Aguilar, Lisa Rynes and Tina and Danny Matychak and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, George was also predeceased by his son, Brien Field; his sisters, Sande Powell and Sally Horstman and his brother-in-law, D.I. Aguilar.


George was a combat veteran who served with the United States Army during World War II and was a graduate of Cornell University in 1950. He had worked for Southern States Cooperative in the Delaware, Maryland and Virginia area for 20 years before relocating to Canton, NY where he and his family made their home for 20 years while he was serving as a director of the St. Lawrence County Cooperative Extension. George and Ginny purchased a retirement lake home in Colton, NY at Higley Flow on the Racquette River which they have maintained ever since. They had also been active with Hospice both in California and the North Country for thirty years. They returned to Ithaca in 2004 where they have been active members of the McGraw House community.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Jeffrey Tunnicliff on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church. Private interment will take place at the Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in George's memory may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, Immaculate Conception School or to Hospicare of Ithaca. Bangs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
