Gayle Smith Gulyas

Gayle Lillian Gulyas, 76, of Ithaca, NY passed away on 12/24/19 after a extended hospitalization.

Gayle was born on 9/11/43 to Ralph and Winiferd Smith in Dundee NY. After graduating from Dundee High school, she went on to study cosmetology in Rochester, NY.

Gayle then moved to Ithaca and worked at The College Spa where she met her first husband Richard (Dick) Batterson. They had their only child, Shireen Batterson in 1970. Gayle was also involved in the lives of her step daughters, Daphne, Joan and Susan "Seb" Batterson. They were divorced in 1986.

In 1987, she met Steven Gary Gulyas, and they wed in Colorado on 9/30/2000. They lived together in Ithaca in a beautiful house near the lake with their dogs and cats.

Gayle owned a very successful business as a hair stylist first at her home on Grove Place and then downtown on Green Street at Gayle's Uptown Salon. She was so grateful for her many loyal and loving clientele. She was well known and liked in the community.  She was also a district educator for Redken. She used her talent as a hairdresser to share her knowledge at educational events and shows and conducted in salon classes. She was a fiery, spunky, redhead! A dedicated worker and a kind heart.

Gayle volunteered at Shireen's schools Glenwood and South Hill and was very loved by the children she helped. Gayle also had a passion for animals which she passed onto her daughter Shireen.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a local animal shelter in her name.
