Evelyn E. Van Etten, 84, of Newfield, NY, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2016 at the Cayuga Ridge Nursing Facility. She was born in Penn Yan, daughter of the late Earl and Alice Crofoot Braman and was the widow of Donald VanEtten.
Evelyn and Donald married on Christmas Eve of 1951. Evelyn and Donald lived in Danby with their five children, later moving to Enfield where Evelyn began working at Ithaca College. Evelyn spent many years working at the college, becoming a familiar face to many upon retiring. After Donald's death in 1996, Evelyn moved to the Newfield Garden Apartments where she became a memorable part of a small community. Throughout the years, Evelyn has built strong friendships with many other residents in her building. Evelyn enjoyed community activities in the commons room, such as dinners and bingo. Evelyn enjoyed gathering for the Newfield Old Home Days each year, admiring the live country music. Evelyn watched game shows on television as well as WWE wrestling, NASCAR racing and Yankees baseball. Evelyn was an avid bowler and bowled on a league at Bowl-O-Drome for several years. Evelyn especially enjoyed spending time with her family, gathering for Holiday dinners.
Evelyn is survived by her five children, Danny Van Etten, Donnie Lee Van Etten, David Van Etten (Nancy Van Etten), Dawn Shevalier (Van Etten) and Dale Van Etten along with her several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Evelyn's life will be held on Wednesday, May 4th at 4:00 PM at The Newfield Garden Apartments, Main St., Newfield. Private burial will be held at the Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Unity House of Cayuga County Inc.
