Estelle Jane Silverman

July 21, 1933 — November 23, 2016

Estelle Jane Silverman passed away on November 23, 2016, in her family's home in Ithaca, New York, embraced by her son Elliott, and family friends and caregivers, Alex and Natasha Karandeyev.

Estelle was born in Newport, Rhode Island to James and Kathleen Daglis. Estelle was a proud member of the Newport, Rhode Island St. Spyridion Greek Orthodox Church and enjoyed greatly being the organ player for the Congregation and was a student pilot while attending Smith College. Estelle loved growing up in Newport, with her phenomenal parents James (born in Greece) and Kathleen (born in Jamaica Plan, MA). Estelle's great joy growing up was her bond with her brother Arthur and sister Fay and the Greek community of cousins and friends in Newport.

Estelle was a proud teacher of 5th and 6th grade in Newport, RI, Tampa, FL, and Manhasset, NY. Estelle moved to New York after caring for her parents for ten years, following the death of her brother at age 23, Lt. Arthur Daglis, United States Marine Corps fighter pilot, in a military training exercise during the Korean War, while also a full time enthusiastic and dedicated school teacher in Newport and Tampa. It was when Estelle moved to Manhattan to teach in Manhassett, NY, that Estelle met the love of her life, Gerald. Gerald was a physician and professor at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Weill Cornell Medical College, and they married and raised their son, Elliott, in a close, loving, giving and singing family Manhattan home.

Estelle and Elliott formed a team to care for Gerald after having a stroke. They were the closest of teams caring for family as Elliott went to graduate school at Weill Cornell Medical College and founded, designed and directed, the Skills Acquisition and Innovation Lab (SAIL) - at New York Presbyterian - Weill Cornell Medical College, to continue his family's passion of improving the art of teaching, wellness, humble camaraderie, and integrating music and arts in the training in medicine. Estelle and Elliott continued being the closest of teams in 2011 when Gerald passed away and Elliott took charge of caring for his mother with Alzheimer's disease.

Estelle passed away in the arms of her son Elliott as they sang her favorite song, which was performed and recorded for her by Scott Tucker, Conductor of The Choral Arts Society of Washington, D.C. and Professor of Music at Cornell University.

Estelle is survived by her son Elliott, and family friends Alex and Natasha, Dennis, Nola and Sasha, Artem and Meghan, and Kirill and Caroline Karandeyev and Howard and Rosalind Feinstein, who celebrated life, family and friendship, with her daily.

Funeral services will be held at St. Catherine's Greek Orthodox Church in Ithaca, NY on Saturday, November 26th at 9am.
