Estelle Ruth (Newcomer) Akers

Estelle Ruth (Newcomer) Akers, 89, went to be with the Lord January 9, 2018
-Born August 22, 1928, in Mineral City Ohio, to Alva Lee Newcomer and Mary Roxie (Brooks) Newcomer. The family moved back to Miami, Florida from Ohio when Estelle was 6 years old. Ruth, as she liked to be called, graduated from Miami Senior High School early and entered into a work/study program for secretarial work. She career spanned working for Dade County Florida and Hertz Corporation and lastly as an office manager/bookkeeper for her husband, Dr. Alvin Akers, DDS in Miami and Mt. Dora Florida. In 1981, Ruth and Alvin moved to Eustis, Florida. In 2013, Ruth moved to Ithaca New York to be near her daughter Janet after the passing of Alvin in 2010.

Ruth was an Eastern Star, a Daughters of the Nile, a member of the Lake Shrine Ladies Auxiliary and a Red Hat Lady. She was active with Alvin, a Mason and Shriner, in supporting the Shriner's Burn and Crippled Children's Hospital.

She is pre-deceased by her most beloved husband, Dr. Alvin E. Akers, brother Jasper Newcomer, sisters Emma Belle Ruth and Katharine Fisher. As a wonderful mother, she is survived by her daughters, Janet Ruth (Thomas) Gray and Molly Ann Popp. As a caring "GrandRu", she is survived by Melanie (Sean) Murphy, Katelyn (Scott) Herrick, Kelly Popp, two great grandchildren Liam and Hazel Herrick and two great grandbabies to be born this year. She is also survived by her sister Mary Lee Henault and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018 @ 11am at Danby Community Church, 1859 Danby Rd, Ithaca, New York and a brief graveside service for the family at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions can be made to benefit the Shriner's Burn and Crippled Children Hospital.
