Edwin L. Resler, Jr.

It is with great sadness that the family of Edwin L. Resler, Jr. announces his passing on July 21, 2019. Ed was born Nov 20, 1925 in Pittsburgh PA, son of Edwin L. Resler, Sr. and Ruth Elizabeth Blesh. His siblings were Lois Weyman (Jack), Marilyn Leonard (Russ), and Jean Russell (Don). He married his wife Frances (nee Williams) in Miami in 1948.

After graduating from Notre Dame University, in 1947 Ed and Frances moved to Ithaca, NY where Ed attended Cornell, receiving his Ph.D. in aeronautical engineering. Ed was a professor of aerospace engineering at Cornell starting in 1956, then went on to direct the Graduate School of Aerospace Engineering from 1963 to 1972, and served a five-year term as the first Director of the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Ed was deeply involved in the early design of wave engines, shock-tube research, magnetohydrodynamics, and ferrohydrodynamics. A number of patents resulted from his studies pertaining to the control of combustion and the elimination of pollution in automobile engines. Among other accomplishments throughout his career, Ed helped minimize the sonic boom in aircraft, and worked on jet-propulsion systems for aircraft and space vehicles.

Ed was a devoted husband to Frances, and a loving father, brother, grandfather, teacher and friend. He is survived by his wife Frances, sons Edwin (Jean), Timothy, Carl and Daniel (Linda), daughter Suzanne, grandchildren Dassance (Reed), Seth and Gwen (Joe), and great-grandchildren Mason, Elly and Odin. He was 93 years old.
