Edward E. Laine, 79, of Newfield, NY, passed away Thursday, March 05, 2020 at the Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility, Montour Falls, NY.

Edward Laine died in the early morning of March 5 ^th , at the age of 79 after a prolonged illness. Ed lived his entire life in Newfield, NY, and was an active member of the community.

Edward graduated from Newfield Central High School, and then Cornell University, before beginning his career in dairy farming. He purchased a plot of land from Alfred Olli, which lies adjacent to the farm of his parents, Eino and Tellervo Laine. He married Sigrid Huhta of Spencer, NY, in 1966, which would prove to be one of his best decisions, as she would remain with him until the end. A strong believer in education, Edward sat on the Newfield Central School Board for 15 years, where he fought hard in support of the Head Start program as well as advocating for students who could use a second chance. He was a lifelong member of the Newfield Rod and Gun Club, a responsible hunter, a good euchre player, a Mason, a pretty good bowler, and a fair dealer. His love and respect for his land and the animals he kept were clear manifestations of his soft spoken and generous heart. He liked to tell (and repeat) a story on occasion, but those who knew him best would tell you he’d always make sure you had a cold beer in your hand before he got too far into it. If he happened to be driving by during a snowstorm, and your driveway was drifted over, he was the kind of guy who would take the extra 10 minutes to plow you out. In short, if you needed something, and he could help, he would. After selling the dairy cows in 1989, Ed changed careers and began working in real estate. He was always a square dealer, and that carried through into this new venture. He quickly built a strong reputation for fairness in his practice. Despite the considerable time demands of farm life, Ed and Sigrid were at every polo match, band concert, little league game, football game, basketball game, Boy Scout event, track meet, and softball game that they could reasonably make it to. Ever supportive of his family and friends, he will be sorely missed.

Edward is survived by his loving wife, Sigrid; his children, Christine Laughlin, Matthew Laine, and Andrew Laine; his grandchildren, Mitchell Laughlin, William Laine, and Katherine Laine; and his sister Lucina Marie Brogan.

A family interment of ashes will take place in the spring at the North Van Etten LaRow Cemetery.
