Edward J. "Ned" Hickey, 86, of Glastonbury CT, formerly of Ithaca NY and the beloved husband to the late Ann (Swanson) Hickey, peacefully passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at The Hearth at Glastonbury. Ned was born December 27, 1930 and raised in Hartford CT, son of the late John J. and Elizabeth (Callahan) Hickey.
He attended and graduated from the Hartford School System and later obtained a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Hawaii as well as a Master's Degree from Cornell University. Ned proudly served our country as an Airborne Ranger in the US Army and was stationed in various places including wartime Korea and Vietnam, eventually retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant.
Ned and his wife Ann settled in Ithaca, NY in 1966 where he was assigned to the ROTC Dept. at Cornell and soon began a 2nd career as a US History teacher at Ithaca High School until his retirement in 1986. Active within his community, Ned was first appointed to the Village of Lansing Board of Trustees back in 1981. In 1987 he became a member of the Planning Board and served as Chairman until he resigned in 2010. In 2009 the New York Planning Federation awarded Ned the distinguished John O. Cross Award, an award given yearly to an outstanding planning board chair.
Ned will be fondly remembered by a host of friends and former colleagues in the Ithaca area, as well as by his nephew John Hickey, his wife Lynda and their three children of Colchester CT, his niece Trish Berk (Hickey) and her husband Chuck of Glastonbury CT. The family wishes to express a special thanks to Mario Tomei, a dear friend who supported and assisted Ned during the period after Ann passed away.
Friends may call at the Bangs Funeral Home, 209 W. Green St, Ithaca on Friday evening, June 23rd from 4-6 pm. A private military burial will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
