EDITH C. TOUGAS
Edith ("Edie") Catherine (Contenti) Tougas, formerly of Providence and Coventry, Rhode Island (RI), passed from this world to her eternal rest on December 6, 2014 at the Hospicare Residence on South Hill in Ithaca, NY. She was the wife of the late Raymond F. Tougas. Edie was born and grew up in Providence, RI, and was the daughter of the late Peter and Marguerite (Angelillo) Contenti, and sister of the late Sally Perry and Louis Contenti. She is survived by her daughter Suzanne Snedeker and son-in-law Jeffrey Snedeker of Ithaca, NY, grandson Daniel Snedeker of Allston, MA, and many loving nieces, nephews, and great- and great-great- nieces and nephews.
Before her marriage to beloved husband Ray in 1955, Edie worked as a legal secretary to Christopher Del Sesto, known as "Mr. D." Mr. Del Sesto later served as Governor of Rhode Island from 1959 to 1961. Edie moved with her husband and daughter to Coventry, RI in 1959. She was member of Saints John and Paul Roman Catholic Church in Coventry, RI for over 40 years, taught CCD Catholic education classes there, and was a tutor for Literacy Volunteers of America. Edie moved to Ithaca's East Hill in 2001 to be closer to her daughter's family. She was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church. Edie's final home was on South Hill at the Hospicare Residence where she had a view of the rolling hills of Ithaca. Edie was a lady of grace, full of love and kindness for others. Edie wanted you to know that she "loves you all."
Edie and her family wish to thank the caring staff of the Cayuga Medical Center, Dr. Ann Costello, Comfort Keepers, and the "angels on the hill" at the Hospicare Residence. Her family is thankful to be held in prayer by the members of Immaculate Conception Church and St. Luke Lutheran congregations in Ithaca and many loving friends and family members.
Her life will be celebrated in a Mass of Christian Burial at Saints John & Paul Church, Coventry, RI, with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Greenwich, RI. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca. The family is being helped by Bangs Funeral Home in Ithaca and the Iannotti Funeral Home in Coventry, RI. Memorial gifts to Hospicare and Palliative Services, 172 East King Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850, or the Little Sisters of the Poor, 964 Main St., Pawtucket, RI 02860, will be appreciated by her family.
