Haring, Edith LouiseEdith Louise Haring, longtime resident of Lansing, passed away peacefully at her home in Florida in the arms of her loving family on Saturday, August 15, 2015. She was born March 1, 1915 in Ithaca, the second oldest of five children born to the late Ernest and Julia Brown.
While working at a hair salon in Collegetown in Ithaca, Edie met Howard "Smokie" Haring and they were married in Louisiana in 1942. Smokie was serving with the United States Air Force at the time residing in Texas before coming back to New York and raising their family. She and Smokie owned and operated Flower Fashions by Haring in Community Corners for many years. Edie and Smokie enjoyed the company of their many friends in their retired life in Holmes Beach, FL and Bobs Lake, Canada; where even today the family shares great memories. She loved to fish and cook up the catch of the day to serve to family and friends and loved going out to dinner to enjoy oysters and lobster bisque. She was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Wells College Course Women's League and especially looked to forward to rounds of golf with her grandchildren. Edie had a tremendous will to live her life to the fullest and she continued to do that even following Smokie's passing in 1999, continuing to spend winters in Florida and summers on Cayuga Lake at Milliken Station. Throughout her life she was a loving and caring woman with a deep appreciation of her family and friends.
Edie will be missed by her children, Donna and Stewart Doty, Richard Haring and Carol Vary, John and Pam Haring, Jim Haring and Mary Fedorka; her grandchildren, Danny and Julie Boles, Lisa and Dan Quigley, Tom Boles, Vicki and Tom Sill, Katie and Scott Prasek, Christopher Haring, Kelly and Derek Chaffee, Jody Haring, Cheryl and Scott Hamilton and Steve Doty; and her great-grandchildren, Kevin, Julie, Kelsy and Cole Quigley, Sierra and Chelsea Boles, Darren, Corey and Nathan Sill, Connor Chaffee, Addison Prasek and Brian Doty. She is also survived by her brother, Ernest Brown Jr. and his wife, Jan; her sister, Elizabeth Hoefer; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her brothers, Charles and John Brown; sisters-in-law, Bunye Brown, Helen Brown and Anne Brown; and brother-in-law, Fred Hoefer.
