Dr. Abraham Mulugetta

April 30, 1951 — January 29, 2024

Ithaca

Dr. Abraham Mulugetta, age 72 of Ithaca, passed away at Columbia University Irving Medical Center on January 29, 2024. Family members prayed by his side at his passing. Born April 30, 1951 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Abraham was the eldest son of the late Zewdinesh Gebereyes and Mulugetta Welde Giorgis. Abraham is survived by his wife Dr. Yuko Mulugetta, son Retta Abraham and daughter-in-law Marissa Abraham, daughter Menna Samaha, son-in-law Eli Samaha and two grandchildren Adelia and Imiya Samaha, two brothers Mesfin and Heskias Mulugetta and five sisters: Kidest, Martha, Selamawit, Sofia and Segenet Mulugetta.

From an early age, Abraham displayed an insatiable curiosity and a passion for learning, leading to numerous awards from Emperor Haile Selassie. He eventually landed in Madison, Wisconsin to pursue his Ph.D. and went on to live a great American dream. His academic journey ultimately led him to become a distinguished professor at Ithaca College, where he dedicated nearly four decades of his life to shaping minds of the next generation. Ithaca College honored Abraham with many awards, culminating in him receiving the Chaired position of Charles A. Dana Professor of Finance and International Business. While an esteemed educator, Abraham's legacy extends far beyond the classroom, touching the lives of countless students, colleagues and friends.

As a professor, Abraham was not only known for his exceptional intellect but also for his kind, compassionate and humble nature. His unwavering commitment to his students went beyond the academic realm; he took a genuine interest in their well-being, serving not just as an educator but as a mentor and friend. Many remember him for his open-door policy, offering guidance and support whenever it was needed.

In the classroom, Abraham was an innovative and inspiring force. His teaching methods were not confined to traditional boundaries, and he constantly sought new ways to engage and challenge his students. His most enduring professional legacy was reimagining finance education by founding the Center for Trading and Analysis of Financial Instruments (known as the Trading Room) in 1995. The first undergraduate facility of its kind in the United States, the Trading Room allowed students to study financial markets by merging theoretical finance with real time, practical applications using state-of-the-art technology. His dedication to fostering experiential learning, critical thinking and creativity left an indelible mark on those fortunate to have been a part of his classes.

Beyond academia, Abraham's impact was felt through his kindness and unconditional love. He was a pillar of strength for his family, a loyal friend to many and a source of inspiration for all who had the privilege of knowing him. His warm smile, gentle demeanor, and words of encouragement will forever echo in the hearts of those who were touched by his presence.

Dr. Abraham Mulugetta's legacy lives on through the many he influenced and the positive change he instilled in the world. As we mourn his passing, we remember the lessons he imparted, the love he shared, and the inspiration he provided. In celebrating his life, we honor a man whose contributions and character will forever be etched in our collective memory.

Yuko, his wife of forty-two years, treasures that “Abraham taught me how to love someone deeply and totally.” His children remember his unconditional love. His grandchildren continue to make deposits to the “Empathy & Kindness Bank” he created with them.
