Douglas Small, Jr.

Douglas Small, Jr. passed away at Beechtree Care Center on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the age of 71 in Ithaca, New York. He was born in Harlem, New York on January 14, 1942, to Martha Carr-Field and Douglas Small, Sr. He was raised as one of nine children of Martha Small-Fields and Lionel Fields, Sr. Doug was a professional chef, as his father was before him, and his career included a stint on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as cooking for Mardi Gras in New Orleans. He was famous for his gumbo and the pleasure he took in cooking good food to share with others. He was also an appreciator of artistic beauty and an accomplished painter himself. He leaves behind 2 children, Darnell Taylor and Nicole Small; Step Father, Lionel Fields, Sr. ; sisters Shirley Smullen and Lois Myers, brothers Lionel Fields, Jr, Leonard (Lenny) Fields, and Keith Fields; caring cousins Emmanuel Johnson, Andrew Carter, and beloved niece Lisa Ezell-Brown. Also, special friends Brenda Caldwell, Anne Posel, Anisa Mendizabel , and Valerie Skyes who gave their time and heart to Douglas and many other friends and family in New York, Louisiana, and elsewhere who will miss him. Funeral will be on Friday, September 6, 2013 at 11 am at Bangs Funeral Home, 209 West Green Street, Ithaca, NY 14850 and burial at Maple Grove Cemetery in Candor, New York.
