Donna Bergmark

March 11, 1943 — October 15, 2015

Donna Bergmark of Ithaca, NY passed away Thursday October 15, 2015 at the Robert Packer Trauma Center in Sayre, PA. Her husband of 52 years, Professor Emeritus William Bergmark, was with her at her bedside.
Born Donna Jean Caroon in March of 1943 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the first of four children, she grew up in northern Minnesota, attended Carleton College in Northfield MN, graduated from Boston University with a BA in History and received her Master's Degree in Computer Science from Cornell University. She worked in computer science since 1965 until she retired from Cornell Computer Science Department on January 3, 2004. The Computer Science Department is where she started as a graduate student some 30 years before her retirement. It was her home and she treasured the friends she made there among the faculty and students. Over the years, Donna held positions with the Ithaca College Math Department, the Cornell Computer Services, and the Cornell Theory Center. A Google search for Donna Bergmark offers a glimpse into the early years of computer technology development and details of her extensive career.
An avid skier, gardener, and traveler, she had many stories of her exploits to share with family and friends. She played the piano, loved classical music and was addicted to opera. If she were anywhere close to a museum, she would have to spend hours there. She loved to hike, cook, eat and drink wine-- passions she shared with her Bill.
She is survived by her husband Bill, sisters Janet and Joanie, sister-in-law Kay, nieces Katie and Kristi, nephews Scott and Patrick Jason (PJ) plus many cousins.
Arrangements were made by Bangs Funeral Home of Ithaca. A private burial will be held at Greensprings Natural Cemetery on Monday afternoon, October 19.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Planned Parenthood or a charity of your choice.
