David L. Hendrickson

June 13, 1939 — July 31, 2018

It is with great sadness that the family of David Lee "Papa" Hendrickson announce that he passed away peacefully at home on July 31, 2018 following a brief illness. David was born on June 13, 1939 in Ithaca, NY to Dick Sr. and Alberta (Wood) Hendrickson. He spent his childhood and teenage years in Ithaca with his siblings until he went into the Army as a young adult. When he returned home from the service he met the love of his life, Doris Jane (King) Hendrickson. They married on June 1st of 1963. Nine months later they became pregnant for a daughter, their only child, DoraLee Marie (Hendrickson) Knuppenburg. On the night of November 8th, 1964, David and Doris spent the evening watching America's Funniest Home Videos, laughing so hard that Doris went into an early labor. They welcomed their baby girl into the world on November 9th of 1964. They named her DoraLee after her father, David Lee. David bought his family home on South Hill, where he lived the remainder of his life and began his printing business, Ithaca Graphics Composition. He owned a local softball team, IGC (Ithaca Graphics Composition), which he took great pride in. He never missed a single game! They were a winning team and he proudly displayed their many trophies in the Ithaca Graphics Shop. In October of 1986, DoraLee and Gary Woodin gave birth to David's only grandchild, Karissa Leigh, who was also named after David Lee. She was his sweetheart, he would always tell her that she was his "favorite one, because she's the only one". Karissa gave him the name that would stick with him for the rest of his life; all of his family, even nieces and nephews , knew his as "Papa". David did everything for his family, he even installed a beautiful in-ground pool for Karissa when she was just one-year-old! David had many passions in his life, from his business to his baseball team, but nothing was more important than family. The legacy that he left behind was the importance of family which will be carried on.

David will forever be remembered by his wife of 55 years, Doris, and his daughter DoraLee (Leland) Knuppenburg. He will also be forever remembered and missed by his granddaughter, Karissa (Woodin) Crossman, and his grandson, Robert Crossman, who David considered his son. Robert was a very special caregiver during David's brief illness. He will be greatly missed by his great-grandchildren, Harper and Jackson Crossman. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He told Harper every day that she is his angel and she helped guide him through his illness. David could not have been more proud to have a great-grandson, as he was the only son born into his family. Finding out that Jackson was going to be a boy was one of David's happiest and proudest moments. David is also survived by a brother, Jimmy Hendrickson of Enfield, NY and a sister, Dolores Root of Arizona, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Dick Sr. and Alberta, his brothers, Raymond, Jerry, Chuckie, Dick Jr., and his sister, Marlene.

A Celebration of life will be held Sunday August 5, 2018 at the Eagles club form 12:00 noon to 5:00 P.M.
