Clarence G. Moore

Clarence G. Moore, 92, formerly of Ithaca, NY passed away at Upstate Medical Center on November 27,2021 after a brief illness.  He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-three years Hannah, his son George, sister Norma Boronkay (Moore) and brothers Irving and Palmer Moore.  Clarence is survived by his sons, John (Colleen) Moore and Doug (Nancy) Moore, grandchildren Erin Vickory and Jennifer Stephenson (George Moore), and several nieces and nephews.

Clarence was born on July 15,1929 in Ithaca, NY and graduated from Ithaca High School.  After high school, he attended SUNY Morrisville earning his Associate’s degree in Automotive Trades, and later, his Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Oswego. He worked at Crispell Brothers as a diesel mechanic and then entered the U.S. Navy.  When he was in the Navy, he met Hannah and were married at the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City.   While Clarence was in the Navy he served on the USS Nipmuc, a sea going tug.  He had fond memories of towing targets for the USS Missouri and in 1955 towing the USS Constellation from Boston to Baltimore where it still resides today.

Once separated from the Navy he returned to Ithaca and was employed as a mechanic for Ithaca City Schools.  When BOCES was formed, he was the first auto mechanic instructor and later the first auto body instructor.  During that time, he also worked part-time driving a charter coach bus for Crispell Brothers.  Clarence took great pride in knowing that students who took his courses went on to have successful careers in the automotive field.  After twenty years of service, Clarence retired from BOCES.  He then began working full-time for Swarthout Coaches for twenty-two years - first as a mechanic and then later as a motor coach driver.  When he wasn’t working, he spent time with his sons as a Boy Scout troop leader and working at Camp Barton as a medical director.  After his retirement he enjoyed visiting family, and friends that he made along the way.

Clarence was an avid Yankees and NASACAR fan and enjoyed watching horse racing. He excelled in all things mechanical and automotive.  Prior to navigation systems, he had a knack of helping those who were lost with just a phone call using his experience, instinct, and landmarks such as “turn at the diner”.

The family would like to thank the staff of Upstate Medical in Syracuse for the compassion and kindness, especially the 6K floor nursing staff.  Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2021 from 11am - 12pm with a memorial service to be held at noon in Bangs Funeral Home, 209 W. Green Street, Ithaca.  Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that charitable contributions be made to a charity of their choice or perform an act of kindness for someone.
