Christian Duttweiler

January 1, 1979 — September 28, 2014

Christian M. Duttweiler passed away in the presence of his parents September 28, 2014 at the Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca after a long illness. He was born in Ithaca as the Tompkins County New Year's Baby in 1979 and spent most of his life in the Ithaca area. He is survived by his parents, Michael and Linda (Redington) Duttweiler, his sister Katrina Duttweiler Waxman, her husband Andrew and their daughter Abigail Jane, aunts and uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Gladys and Russell Duttweiler and Joan and George Redington of Jeffersonville, New York.
Christian loved and excelled at academics graduating from Ithaca High School in 1996 and from Harvard University in 2001 receiving Summa Cum Laude honors as a chemistry major. He worked as a research assistant at Cornell, was an award-winning chemistry Teaching Fellow at Harvard, and a freelance editor contributing to books and journals for publishers including MIT Press and Cambridge University Press primarily in the field of foreign affairs.
Music was an important part of his life from school concert bands, jazz bands, and pit orchestras to playing in the Harvard marching band and the Harvard Summer Pops orchestra. The tenor sax and clarinet were his instruments of choice. He was an avid collector of jazz and classical music. In recent years, he developed a keen interest in nature photography.
Natural areas were a prominent interest starting from camping in the Catskill and Adirondack mountains as a youngster to exploring the ocean shores around Boston, Cape Cod, and Delaware. The Finger Lakes became particular favorites and were his primary photography subjects. Many days he and his father could be found wandering the back roads of the Finger Lakes region looking for that perfect snapshot. When not sorting through his thousands of local shots, he was an occasional blogger on all things political and social.
