Charles F. White

Charles F. White, died Friday, August 9, 2013 after a brief illness. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 13, 1922 to William and Elizabeth (O'Brien) White.

During WW II, he served in the United States Marine Corps in the northern Solomon Islands and in the Phillippines as a tail gunner in Marine Bombing Squadron 611.
Mr. White graduated from high school in Nassau County, Long Island, NY in 1940. He obtained a degree in Architecture from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY in 1951 and obtained his NY license to practice architecture in 1955. He was a Project Architect at Smith Haines Lundbergh & Whaler in Manhattan in the 60's and 70's and was an associate of Fred Thomas Architects in the 70's and 80's in Ithaca, NY.

His wife, Helen Dryden White, died in 1970 and he left the NY area in 1973 moving to Ithaca where his daughter lived with her husband. He married Doris Hoyt Salerno in 1978.

In 1987, he retired from architecture and started oil and watercolor painting and became a member of ASMA (American Society of Marine Artists). He moved to Yarmouth, ME with his wife, Doris in 1999 and then to South Portland in 2000. They volunteered at the Portland Harbor Museum and the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse group while in Maine. They returned to Ithaca in 2008.
In addition to his first wife, he is also predeceased by his brother, William White in 1992 and sister in law, Kathleen White in 2013. He is survived by his wife, Doris White of Ithaca; his daughter, Carole Knobil and her husband, Erich; grandchildren, Christopher and Eleanor Knobil and great grandson, Ned. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Anthony Salerno and Cheryl Baldwin and their families and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Bangs Funeral Home on Friday at 1 p.m. Friends may call prior to the service beginning at noon. Interment with military honors will be held at the Long Island National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the DAV or any other veterans organization.
