Carol C. Kimball

Carol C. Kimball, 95, died on October 26, 2018, after a period of declining health, surrounded by her loving family.

Carol was born in Binghamton, NY, on August 7, 1923, to Edward S. Chamberlayne and Agnes M. Chamberlayne. The family moved to Grafton, MA in 1929, and Carol grew up there, graduating from Grafton High School in 1940. She studied at Middlebury College, and because of WWII, she graduated in October 1944, but was a member of the class of 1945. She taught high school for a year before entering the Graduate Teachers College in Winnetka IL, where she received a MA degree in 1947. For the following 3 years she taught elementary classes at the Windward School in White Plains NY and in Pound Ridge NY.

In 1950 she married John T. Kimball, and they had 4 children, all of whom survive. She and John moved to Baltimore, where she entered the field of special education and taught at The Children’s Guild of Baltimore, a school for emotionally disturbed preschool-age children. She also taught special education in the Baltimore County public school system.

In 1975, she graduated from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, receiving a Master of Mental Health degree. She then worked at Baltimore City Hospital as a psychotherapist, and later started a private practice of psychotherapy as a Mental Health Counselor. She specialized in treating children in foster care, and in helping members of families who lived in public housing projects.

In 1981, with their family now grown, she and John moved to Ithaca, NY to be near relatives. In Ithaca, she continued her private psychotherapy practice. She joined the Ithaca Friends Meeting, and was active in the Religious Society of Friends. She particularly enjoyed participating in and helping to run the Friends Conference on Religion and Psychology. She loved music, and belonged to choral groups all her adult life, including the Ithaca Community Chorus. She enjoyed leading groups of many kinds, and she co-led bereavement groups at the former Displaced Homemakers Center for many years. For 12 years, she also led Senior Friends, the support group at the Senior Citizens Council.

Carol had a number of close and devoted friends, each of whom brought special joy to her life. She treasured each relationship and was a believer in the transforming power of love in people’s lives. She demonstrated this belief by the way she related to her family, friends, community and planet.

She is survived by her daughters, Alison (widow of Michael) Buell, and Erica (Gary) Weiss, both of Ithaca, and by her sons Schuyler (Mary Alice) Kimball of Rhode Island, and Owen (Allison Norton) Kimball of Massachusetts. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. Carol was pre-deceased by her sister, Ellen Parsons Chamberlayne, in 2001 and by her beloved husband John in 2011.

A service in celebration of Carol’s life will be held in Ithaca at the Auditorium at Longview on November 18th 2018 at 2pm. Carol chose to leave her body to science and burial services will take place later this year. Bangs Funeral Home of Ithaca is in charge of services.
