Carol John

Carol Knight John, 76, of Ithaca, died with her family present on June 12, 2016. She was born in Riverside, NJ, on January 24, 1940, to Charles Knight and Anne McVaugh Knight. A member of the Religious Society of Friends, she belonged to Westfield Friends Meeting in Cinnaminson, NJ. She attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she received a degree in Occupational Therapy, which she continued to practice and teach throughout her life. In 1962 she married John Warren (Jack) Harley. She and Jack lived in Media, PA; Washington, DC; and Peninsula, OH. Carol and Jack's marriage ended in divorce in1985 and was later annulled. Carol moved to Cleveland Heights, OH; Chicago, IL; Hollywood, FL; and Ithaca, NY, where she taught occupational therapy at Ithaca College. Carol met Jim John at Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca, and she and Jim were married there on July 8, 2002.

Carol was a hiker, sailor, marathoner, triathlete, gifted teacher, master gardener, and prolific quilter. Whatever she undertook she did with energy, passion, and generosity. She will be remembered with love for for operating Wonderful Wheelchairs, a charity which restores and repairs wheelchairs for the needy, and for her commitment to the Tompkins County Quilter's Guild.

Carol is survived by husband Jim John; sister Mary Anne Hunter; brother Robert Knight; first husband Jack Harley; children Walter Harley, John Harley, and Rachel Harley Mitchell; grandson Charlie Mitchell; six stepchildren; and many stepgrandchildren, cousins, nephews, and nieces.

A funeral mass will be held at 10AM, Wednesday, June 15 at Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca. Friends may call on Tuesday, June 14 from 4-6PM at Bangs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Nature Conservancy or the charity of their choice.
