Bernard Hogben – July 28, 1929 – September 1, 2023
Bernard (Bernie) was born in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England on July 28, 1929, to Henry (Harry) and Louisa (Lucy) Hogben. While a young toddler, the family immigrated to the United States eventually making their home in Danby, New York. Bernard graduated from Ithaca High School and began his employment with NCR Corporation in 1947. He married Beatrice Marjorie Harrington on May 3, 1952, and soon after was drafted to serve in the US Army from 1953 until 1955, being honorably discharged as a Specialist, Third Class. Upon his discharge, he returned to NCR Corporation and continued his career there until 1984 when he accepted early retirement. He had the proud distinction of being an industry- trained Senior Mechanical Engineer and held memberships in both the Industrial Management club and the Society of Tool Engineers. After retirement, he worked for a short time as a consultant with Manpower and continued with Turner Design from 1986 until 1989.
He spent twenty of his retirement years volunteering for the Ithaca Kitchen Cupboard five mornings each week stocking shelves with food to be distributed to families in need. He was awarded recognition as Volunteer of the Year by Area Congregations Together. Other volunteer interests included serving as Secretary and Fire Police with the Danby Volunteer Fire Department. His musical talents included playing guitar and harmonica with the Jersey Hill Ridge Runners and the Crane Hill Trio. Bernard’s unwavering faith led him to serve in many capacities at the Danby Federated Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, and more recently, the Caroline Valley Community Church. Bernard was predeceased by his father (Henry Hogben), his mother (Louisa Soady Hogben), and his wife of 63 years Beatrice Marjorie (Harrington) Hogben. Family members still living include his brother, Roy (Ev) Hogben, daughters Bonita Hogben, Beverly (Buddy) Rollins, and son Bernard “Ben” (Susan) Hogben;
as well as seven grandchildren, Travis (Ashleigh) Berggren, Lisa Libraro, Philip (Carly) Libraro, Kyle (Carla) Franklin, Leah (Scott) Conner, Joshua (Ling) Berggren, and Sarah (Liz) Hogben; as well as eight great- grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday, September 6th from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the Caroline Valley Community Church, 546 Valley Rd., Brooktondale, NY, with the funeral to follow. Interment will follow at the Danby Rural Cemetery, Danby, NY.
