Beatrice Marjorie (Harrington) Hogben ascended into the arms of her Lord and Savior on November 15, 2015 after a brief illness. She began her life's journey on May 11, 1932, in Sidney, New York. After graduating from business school, it was love-at-first sight, and not long after she married Bernard Hogben of Danby, NY on May 3, 1952. Second only to her deep love for her family was her love for music, which she shared as organist for three local churches, most recently at the Caroline Center Church in Brooktondale, NY. She acquired an extensive library of music and especially enjoyed accompanying people as they either sang or played a musical instrument.
Beatrice worked as the secretary of Immaculate Conception School for nineteen years prior to her retirement in 1994. She loved all the students whom she considered to be in her care, which included some of her own grandchildren.
Beatrice also volunteered tirelessly and became a life member of the Danby Volunteer Fire Company. She would rise at all hours of the day or night to provide food for fire fighters or direct traffic at a scene. She also participated in many fund raisers.
Another volunteer interest of hers was the Danby Community Library, where she worked on a regular basis providing reading material for members of the community.
Beatrice was predeceased by her father (Leal M. Harrington) in 1974, her mother (Marjorie Osborne Thorpe Harrington) in 1990, and two brothers, Neal in 1987 and Kenneth in 2000. Family members still living include her husband of sixty-three years, Bernard Hogben; a sister, Margaret (Sibley) DeMorier; brother and sister- in-laws Roy and Ev Hogben; daughters Bonita (Silas M.) Ferguson, Beverly (Buddy) Rollins, and son Bernard "Ben" (Susan) Hogben; as well as seven grandchildren, Travis (Ashleigh) Berggren, Lisa Libraro, Philip Libraro, Kyle (Carla) Franklin, Leah Beatrice (Scott) Conner, Joshua Berggren, and Sarah (Sarah) Hogben; six step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren; six step-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Two others who held a special place in her heart include Marvin Berggren and Neal Franklin.
Beatrice's calling hours will be from 12:00 noon-1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 19, 2015, with the funeral to follow at Bangs Funeral Home at 209 West Green Street in Ithaca, NY. Burial will take place at the Danby Rural Cemetery following the funeral.
Beatrice's favorites included anything "lily of the valley" and the color purple. It was her wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be considered for either the Caroline Center Church (719 Buffalo Rd., Brooktondale, NY), or the Danby Volunteer Fire Company (1780 Danby Rd., Ithaca, NY).
The family would like to thank the aides, nurses, doctors, and staff of Cayuga Medical Center for their excellent care and compassion.
