Barbara A. Cappucci

Barbara Ann Cappucci, beloved wife, mother and grandmother died peacefully at home in Ithaca, NY on January 26.  Barbara was born on September 15, 1940 in Flushing, NY to Dorothy Brown Lamude and C. Gordon Lamude.

Barbara met her husband Albert Cappucci in Manhattan.  The couple returned to Albert’s hometown, Ithaca, and were married at St. Catherine of Siena on November 19, 1966.  They welcomed their daughter Debora on October 28, 1971.  Barbara was warmly embraced and loved by Albert’s parents, Yolanda and Americo Cappucci and enjoyed the family gatherings, which also included Albert’s brother, A. Edward Cappucci, his wife Ann Cappucci and their six kids.

Children were Barbara’s passion.  Upon graduating from Marymount Manhattan College in 1962, she began her teaching career, spending most of it as a first grade teacher at Northeast Elementary in Ithaca.  She loved teaching, taking great joy from inspiring children of this age to enjoy reading, writing and math fundamentals.  She left an indelible mark on the children she taught, many who later made special requests for Mrs. Cappucci to teach their own children.

Barbara retired after more than 25 years of teaching, affording her the opportunity to put time and energy into her grandchildren.  She was present for the birth of all four of her grandkids, making countless trips to San Diego to “grandmother” in-person, and directly offering her loving influence to their lives.  She also enjoyed traveling to destinations with her grandkids, continuing to be a teacher by exposing them to new wonders and experiences.  And her grandkids eagerly anticipated their trip to Ithaca each summer during which she shared the beauty and wonder of upstate NY.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents Dorothy Brown Lamude and C. Gordon Lamude, and her brother Kevin Lamude.  She leaves behind her loving husband of 54 years Albert Cappucci, her daughter Debora Cappucci Burke, son-in-law David Burke, grandchildren Preston Buljat, Malia Buljat, Declan Burke and Keaton Burke of San Diego, CA and her brother Terrance Lamude of New York, NY.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. February 2 at St. Catherine’s of Siena and those wishing to pay their respects can attend virtually via stcathofsiena.org.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Family Reading Partnership www.familyreading.org
