Anton “Tony” Egner, 92, of Ithaca, New York passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at his residence in Kendal at Ithaca. He was born May 22, 1930 in New York City, to the late Anton and Teresa (Reinwald) Egner.
Tony is a Graduate of Pratt University, where he received a Bachelor’s in Architecture. He received his Master of City and Regional Planning from Cornell University.
He began his architectural career in New York City and later opened his practice in Ithaca in 1962. Through out his distinguished and award winning career, he worked on many notable landmarks in the Ithaca area, including the Tompkins County Regional Airport and athletic facilities in Cass Park.
He worked extensively on educational facilities; school buildings and auditoriums in the Ithaca City School District, the Cornell Plantations master plan along with various scientific facilities at Cornell University, and the Muller Chapel at Ithaca College.
Tony took great pride in the work he did in public and senior housing and places of worship. Some of those include McGraw House, and First Baptist Church in Ithaca along with structures in Newfield, Trumansburg, and other nearby communities.
Tony is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan Roos Egner, a brother John Egner of Islip, New York, nine nieces and nephews, their spouses, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Tony’s friends and family will dearly miss his warm and enveloping personality. He was frequently known to entertain with his harmonica playing. He loved gardening and passed that love on to the family’s younger generation. His skills as an artist extend far beyond architecture, and he enjoyed photography, drawing and doodling artwork on any surface.
Friends will be received at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 309 Siena Drive, Ithaca, New York. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by internment at Calvary Cemetery, Ithaca, New York.
